What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form. We do not collect the visitor’s IP address, but we do collect the browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here.  We have implemented Avatar Privacy so you have control over what profile picture people see with your comment. After approval of your comment, your chosen profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

Our contact forms collect the data you provide as seen on the form, plus the date and time of the message and the browser user agent string to help in spam detection.  We do not collect the visitor’s IP address. The specified data is stored in our database.  Only trusted and suitably designated people have access to this data.  We do not use the data for marketing purposes.

Cookies

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

To leave a comment on our site you must be logged in and have consented to the saving of your name, email address and optionally, your website in cookies and our database.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

When processing payments, some of your data will be passed to the chosen entity, including information required to process or support the payment, such as the purchase total and billing information.  Since these are all internationally known brands trusted worldwide, we are confident their privacy and security policies when processing your data are industry’s best. 

How long we retain your data

As a default, we retain your data indefinitely, because with such a policy, we can probably assist our customers best.  However, there is an option to delete your account under menu item Dashboard > My Account.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

How we protect your data

Our site uses the latest industry standard encryption technology. 

Administrative access is protected by two-factor authentication and strong passwords.  Temporary administrative access may be granted to trusted organizations to rectify technical problems.  Such temporary access is automatically time limited, typically to one week.
